National Marine Park of Zakynthos
Kalamaki beach is part of the National Marine Park of Zakynthos, which is one of the most important breeding areas of the Caretta-Caretta turtles in the Mediterranean region. The National Marine Park was established with the aim to protect and conserve plants and animal species such as the Caretta-Caretta loggerhead sea turtle and the endangered monk seal Monachus Monachus.
It is located along the southern coast of Zakynthos island and includes three Natura 2000 protected areas. It encompasses Laganas Bay and the islets of Marathonisi, Pelouzo and Strofadia. The area is characterised by a rich variety of habitats, as well as hundreds of species of flora and fauna, some of which are of great importance at national and international level.
